A tattoo is permanent and is made by inserting ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment. Tattoos made on humans are seen as a decorative body modification, while tattoos made on animals are most used for identification or branding. Already for a long time ago tattoos were widespread among the people of Central America, South America, North America, Africa, the Philippines, Polynesia, Borneo, Europe, Cambodia, China and Japan.

The word "tattoo" comes from the Tahitian "tatu" or "Tatau" which means to mark or underline. In Japan the word "irezumi" are used for Japanese tattoos, while the word "tattoo" is used for non-Japanese designs.

While tattoos are considered permanent, it is possible to remove them. They can be removed by laser, fully or partially - black and darker are typical the colored inks that most easily can be removed. The expense and pain of removing tattoos are actually greater than the expense and pain of getting them. The removing may require 1-25 laser treatments.

Tattoos can also be used as a form of cosmetics - when you need permanent makeup and hiding or neutralizing skin discolorations. Permanent makeup is the use of tattoos to enhance eyebrows, lips, eyes (liner), and moles. Michael Jackson was known for having permanent makeup .

You can get tattoos that won't follow you forever - temporary tattoos can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
